WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS from Casey MacGill
My Three Strums
This is a survey course that covers the three main strums that I utilize in my performances.

Swing Strum
I will show you the swing strum as played by the great rhythm guitarists of the 1930’s. You’ll get the techniques to make a crisp swing dance rhythm, and learn a couple swing standards, too. It is the basic building block for playing swing music.

Shuffle Strum
The shuffle strum is on the backbeat, and it’s a backstroke. We’ll learn the feel that connected swing to rock and roll, and do a couple fun tunes like Palm Springs Jump and Choo Choo Ch’ Boogie.

Rhumba Strum
This is the most complex of the strums, but we break it down into three bite‐size morsels and learn a couple classics like Under the Boardwalk and Save the Last Dance for Me. This is a strum of my own invention and provides more of a Latin feel.

Casey MacGill's Biography
Casey MacGill performs music that swings. Nat "King" Cole Trio meets the Mills Brothers. Fats Waller meets Fats Domino. Slim Galliard meets Fred Astaire. It is American music of many decades and no decade in particular, all happening at the same time, woven into a seamless, beautiful whole. At the core of his sound are his band's sometimes sweet, sometimes rough-hewn three-part harmony vocals and a piano-ukulele-bass-and-drums rhythm section that swings in a variety of textures.

Casey MacGill is the heart and soul of the band. From California, he is a classic Hollywood character in appearance and style. MacGill plays boogie-woogie, swing, and stride piano. He blows a lyrical jazz cornet, and his most unique instrumental voice is a 6-string tenor ukulele. He has been singing and arranging vocal harmonies for over 40 years, in a career that stretches from Los Angeles (Mood Indigo, feature films "Frances" and "Swing Shift") to Spokane, WA (The Spirits of Rhythm and the neo-swing classic CD "Jump") to Broadway (The musical "Swing") and finally to Seattle (most recently with the Blue 4 Trio). "I've played a lot of music with a lot of people," he says "and one thing I've learned is to tailor my arrangements to the individual players. It gives each musical situation a unique sound." He steers the band from his piano bench, alternately cruising along and sweating feverishly, switching intuitively between the ukulele and the piano and the cornet, singing and scatting, sometimes all within the same song.

With his former Seattle band, The Blue 4 Trio, Casey released 3 CDs, the most recent of which is Barrelhouse. From the familiar standards ("Out of Nowhere") to boogie-woogie ("Cow Cow Boogie") to vocal pyrotechnics ("Changes") to classic ballads ("Small Fry") to all out good time stomp ("Barrelhouse", a MacGill original) this CD is already considered by many his best yet. The band also toured extensively in Europe, performing for enthusiastic swing dancers in festivals and dance camps.

January 25th through January 27th, 2019

What is NAMM? Read on for an excerpt from Wikipedia, which is accurate as of today! The bold and colored highlights are my own emphasis.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NAMM_Show
  • The NAMM Show is an annual event in the US that its organizers describe as "the world’s largest trade-only event for the music products, pro audio and event tech industry". It is held every January in Anaheim, California, US at the Anaheim Convention Center, and is one of the two largest music product trade shows in the world. The event attracts numerous famous musicians, many of whom are endorsed by exhibitors and come to promote their own signature models and equipment.
  • NAMM is a trade-only business show catering to domestic and international dealers and distributors. The product exhibits are an integral part of the show, allowing the dealers and distributors to see what's new, negotiate deals and plan their purchasing for the next 6 to 12 months. Exhibitors are allotted a specific number of badges based on the size of their booth. Retail Members are allowed a certain number of badges based on their full-time employees.
  • Founded in 1901, "NAMM" stands for the National Association of Music Merchants, although, since its inception, NAMM has evolved from a national retail association into an international association.
In a nutshell, it is the annual event where Lloyd and I (Anacapa Ukulele) get to meet up with our vendors, see various artists, see new products, and keep up with the current trends in the ululele world so that we can remain relevant to our customers needs.  We appreciate your support and hope to bring back some new ukuleles with us!

9/8/2018

We've had a few questions from our customers that we'd like to address, and we have some general information for you.
  • Should I bring my own chair?                No
  • Will there be hand-outs?  Yes, Andrew plans to bring hand-outs for use in the workshop.
  • Should I bring a music stand?       No.  It is optional, but space is limited.  We will provide painter's tape to use for taping music sheets to the chair in front of you if that is easier.
  • Should I bring a dish to share?             No.  We will have a short break and a few light snacks during that time.  Nuts, pretzels, etc (easy peasy finger food, no plates, or utensils), and water available. (Of course, if you want to bring something, that is fine, too (keep in mind we are trying to keep it simple and finger-food).
  • Is the event outdoors?                       Yes.  We are doing our best to provide some shade for you and our guest artists but dress appropriately. The forecast is SUNNY and in the mid to upper 70's...Beautiful.

  • A quick note about parking:  The hair salon is closed on Sunday, so they don't mind if you park in one of their few marked spaces in the back.  Street parking is more available because it is Sunday.  Parking is free.

  • We will open the gates at NOON

  • The workshop is planned to begin at 1 PM.

So excited!  This will be a fun time.  By the way, as of this writing, we only have space for about 10 more people, so if you have any interested friends, let them know that we've made a few more tickets available online and at the shop today (Saturday), but don't count on at-the-door availability.

Thank you,
See you tomorrow!

Lloyd and Lisa Wyckoff
